What a regular savings plan means in Singapore

A regular savings plan invests a chosen amount on a repeating schedule, often monthly. It can buy an ETF, unit trust or another eligible investment. RSP describes the schedule, not a guaranteed-return product: the underlying investment still determines the risk, fees and result.

CPF stays out of these projections on purpose because its legislated interest and withdrawal rules are different from market investing. Indian investors may know the recurring-investment method as a SIP; Singapore commonly calls it an RSP.

How IRAS generally treats long-term investment gains

IRAS says gains from selling shares and financial instruments held as personal investments are generally not taxable. The Singapore projection therefore does not deduct capital-gains tax from a normal long-term investing scenario.

Tax treatment depends on the facts. Activity conducted as a trade and arrangements such as employee share awards can follow different rules, so this calculator does not determine your legal tax status.

How this RSP calculator estimates returns after fees

Contributions go in at the start of each month and compound at the annual return after the fund expense ratio. The 6% default is an editable planning assumption, not a forecast. Use a total-return estimate that includes distributions, then test lower and higher scenarios instead of relying on one historical period.

Target mode calculates the monthly investment required for a chosen future amount. The inflation option also translates the projection into today's purchasing power. Read the linked Singapore RSP guide for a worked example, fee checklist and primary IRAS, MoneySense and FTSE Russell sources.

Frequently asked questions

Is a regular savings plan (RSP) the same as a SIP?

Yes — RSP is Singapore's name for it and SIP (systematic investment plan) is the Indian-English one. Both mean investing a fixed amount automatically every month. The projection math is identical.

What return should I assume for the STI?

There is no single safe forecast. Use total return including distributions, not price return alone, and test a conservative, central and optimistic scenario. The 6% default is editable and is a planning assumption rather than a prediction.

How are regular savings plan returns calculated?

Each monthly RSP contribution compounds for a different length of time. This calculator adds contributions at the start of each month, applies the return after fund fees, and can increase the contribution each year. It separates the amount invested from growth and can also show the result after inflation.

Do I really pay no tax on my gains?

IRAS says gains from shares and financial instruments held as personal investments are generally not taxable. Treatment can differ when the facts amount to a trade or another taxable arrangement, so this calculator does not determine your legal tax status.

Should I count CPF in this projection?

No — CPF Ordinary and Special Account balances earn legislated interest under their own rules and aren't market investments. This calculator models cash investing through a broker; treat CPF as a separate, stable pillar of your plan.

How much can S$500 a month grow to in 10 years?

At a 6% gross annual return less a 0.3% annual expense ratio, S$500 invested at the start of each month projects to about S$81,002 after 10 years. S$60,000 is contributed and about S$21,002 is projected growth. Actual returns will vary.

Is an RSP guaranteed?

Not when it buys market investments such as ETFs or unit trusts. RSP describes the contribution schedule; the underlying product determines its risk, return, fees and whether any amount is guaranteed.
